Joining hands – The Grand Banyan Schools Re-cycling Project
St. Joseph’s High School
Wadala
6th March 2013
Nature and natural environmental beauty are taking a beating
from the careless and insensitive approach of people and their destructive habits. To reverse this trend, many groups have
sprouted with initiatives and projects.
One such project is India’s largest re-cycling project in schools that
aims to save thousands of trees from being cut.
This has resulted in over two lakh notebooks been made from waste paper
collected from schools across India.
A step-by-step process includes:
·
Collection of waste paper including newspapers,
magazines, chart papers, office papers, answer sheets etc… Children and their parents are encouraged to
contribute as much waste as possible.
·
School initiates waste paper collection drives
thrice in the academic year. The waste is handed over to the Project
coordinators during this period. A
representative arranges for the collection of waste from the school as early as
possible, and the waste is weighed before a responsible authority from the
school.
·
All waste collected between Dec 2012 and Apr
2013 is to be converted into notebooks by 31st March 2013
·
Every participating school will receive the high
quality recycled notebooks made from the waste donated by the project organizers
for free. This process will take place in June 2013
With this proposal at our doorstep, the leaders and class volunteers
sprung into action visiting every class and galvanizing the students to
contribute to this worthy cause. The
result: A massive collection of over 600 kg of waste paper (of which 250 kg was
from the school offices, library and newspapers) was handed to the Project
representative on 18th February 2013. A great start indeed to a
noble campaign!
